What exactly Is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a focused state of awareness where the body is fully relaxed, but the subconscious mind is awake. This state allows the hypnotherapist to access your ‘deep’ mind where the positive change and transformation you desire can start to take place through the use of verbal suggestion.
Hypnosis is a completely natural state. In fact, we all go in and out of hypnosis throughout the day. Have you ever been driving and missed your exit on the freeway? Have you been deeply absorbed in a movie at the cinema and forgotten you are actually in a room full of strangers? Perhaps you've daydreamed while sitting on a train, arriving at your destination suddenly and long before you expected. These are just some examples of being in a state of hypnosis.
Does hypnotherapy really work?
Absolutely. In recent years hypnotherapy has become an accepted medical treatment to address a wide variety of issues and conditions. Researchers and professors in universities such as Stanford and Harvard, have conducted clinical studies in hypnosis and found that it does in fact alter the brain and can be used for a multitude of conditions. At Riverhead Hypnotherapy we have been extremely successful in using hypnotherapy to help our clients with many issues including improving self confidence, helping them to stop smoking, achieving significant weight loss and reducing or even eliminating anxiety. Hypnotherapy is an extremely powerful and effective tool and its results are long lasting.
How does hypnotherapy work?
When you are in a hypnotic state, your conscious mind has been relaxed. This allows the hypnotherapist to work directly with your subconscious mind. The subconscious mind holds all of our "programming", much like a computer. You can "know" in your conscious mind that you want to make a change and be determined to make that change, but if your "computer is programmed" to keep doing what you are doing it will be nearly impossible to make lasting change unless you change the programming. That's precisely what hypnotherapy will accomplish.? When you change the subconscious programming the behaviour follows.

What does hypnotherapy feel like?
Hypnosis is a very comfortable, peaceful and pleasant feeling albeit unique to each individual. Your body is extremely relaxed but your mind is aware. You will feel a sense of rejuvenation and refreshment after a session. Many of our clients report a feeling of having had a ‘reboot’ - thoughts are clearer, sleep is deeper and life doesn’t seem as… heavy.
How do I know that I've been hypnotised?
It is a state of deep relaxation, if you feel deeply relaxed in session - it's worked and you'll get the benefits.
Will I lose control of myself?
Absolutely not. Hypnotherapy is a way of giving you more control, not less. You cannot be hypnotised unwillingly. You cannot be prompted to do something that is outside of your usual moral code or reveal anything you do not want to. You are aware of all that is going on and you are in control.
Can I get stuck in hypnosis?
No, you are able to come out of hypnosis any time you wish. You can no more get stuck in hypnosis than you can get stuck asleep. For practical reasons, our therapists end the clients’ trance, but if we didn't the client would naturally either return to full alertness or fall asleep.
What do I need to bring to the table?
A desire for change and a willingness to embrace it when it happens. The choice to begin a program of sessions should be the clients and the clients alone. Making a partner or spouse attend a program under duress or buying a course of sessions as a surprise present is not recommended. Before you attend your first session, you will be given a daily mantra to repeat to start the process rolling.
How much does a full program cost?
For the majority of issues we recommend five sessions, each an hour long, spaced roughly one week apart. The last couple of sessions can be fortnightly. For most of the issues listed above, this full program costs $595.
